When Plans Change: Learning to Pivot and Follow a Different Road

Our South Dakota adventure became a move to Colorado when our daughter received a new job offer. Sometimes plans change, and we learn to pivot with love.

South Dakota Was the Plan

Some trips begin with a carefully planned route, a campground reservation, and a list of places waiting to be explored.

This was supposed to be one of those trips.

Every year on July 21, our youngest daughter and Jim, her daddy, have a father-daughter day. It is a tradition they both look forward to and one that has created many special memories through the years.

This year, we planned to make that tradition part of a larger adventure to South Dakota. We wanted to visit historic sites, explore places we had not seen before, and spend time with some of our daughter’s friends who live there.

The campground was reserved. The plans were made. We were ready to go.

That was the plan.

Then our daughter received a job offer in Colorado.

It was a wonderful opportunity and the beginning of an exciting new chapter for her and our 18-month-old granddaughter. It also meant that everything we had planned needed to change.

South Dakota would have to wait.

Instead of preparing for days of sightseeing and history, we began preparing for a move. We packed our daughter’s belongings into a U-Haul and changed our route toward Colorado.

Life has a way of doing that.

We can spend weeks or months planning where we think we are going, only to discover that the road has turned in a completely different direction.

Sometimes the new road is exciting.

Sometimes it is difficult.

Often, it is both.

Then Life Packed the U-Haul

Changing our plans did not mean the South Dakota trip was unimportant. We were disappointed to miss the historic sites, the campground stay, and time with our daughter’s friends.

However, our daughter needed us for something much more important.

She was moving to a new state, beginning a new job, and creating a new home for herself and her little girl. This was not simply a change in travel plans. It was a major life transition for all of us.

So, we pivoted.

The U-Haul became part of our caravan, and what had been planned as a sightseeing trip became a journey of love, support, and family.

There were belongings to load, miles to travel, an apartment to move into, and a home to begin setting up.

Those tasks may not sound like the adventures people usually write about, but sometimes the most meaningful journeys are not found on an itinerary.

Sometimes they are found in carrying boxes.

They are found in making sure furniture is placed where it needs to go, helping organize a new space, and keeping an 18-month-old entertained while her momma works through the long list of things that come with moving.

We came to Colorado to help our daughter and granddaughter begin again.

That made the change in plans worth it.

South Dakota will still be there. The historic places will still have their stories to tell, and another campground can be reserved.

This moment in our daughter’s life was happening now.

Making Memories Between the Boxes

Although this trip became focused on moving, we have still taken time to enjoy some of the sights around us.

Helping someone move can easily become a nonstop cycle of boxes, errands, unpacking, and trying to remember where everything was placed. We wanted to help our daughter get settled, but we also wanted to make memories together before her new job begins.

That has meant finding small adventures around the work.

We have taken drives, enjoyed the Colorado scenery, watched sunsets, and found places where our granddaughter could play and explore.

The trip may not look like the one we originally planned, but it is still part of our Chasing the Sun journey.

That is one of the lessons we are learning from this experience. An adventure does not disappear simply because the destination changes.

It may take a different form.

Instead of touring South Dakota historic sites, we are learning about a different area and watching our daughter begin to make it her home.

Instead of following a carefully prepared itinerary, we are working around apartment needs, moving schedules, and the routines of a busy toddler.

Instead of checking attractions off a list, we are appreciating the moments we have together.

There is still laughter.

There are still new views outside the window.

There are still memories being created.

The road is different, but it is not empty.

Proud Hearts and a Quieter Home

Our daughter begins her new job on July 27.

We are proud of her for accepting this opportunity and stepping into something new. A new job can bring growth, independence, new friendships, and possibilities that may not have been available before.

We are excited to see where this path takes her.

At the same time, we know there will be a hole in our lives when we return home.

Our daughter and granddaughter have been a constant part of our daily lives for the past year.

We have grown accustomed to seeing them, hearing them, helping with our granddaughter, and sharing ordinary moments that became part of our routine.

Those ordinary moments matter more than we sometimes realize.

An 18-month-old fills a space with movement, curiosity, laughter, toys, snacks, and the occasional toddler-sized bit of mischief. There is always something happening and something new being discovered.

Our home will feel different without them.

We know we will talk on the phone. We will use video calls. We will share pictures and plan visits.

But those things are not the same as having them close enough to be part of everyday life.

That is the difficult side of change.

We can be proud and sad at the same time.

We can celebrate a new opportunity while grieving the routines we are losing.

We can know that moving is the right decision for our daughter while still wishing Colorado were closer to home.

Life does not always ask us to choose only one emotion. Sometimes love means carrying several of them at once.

Following the Road That Opened

This year’s father-daughter day will not happen the way Jim and our daughter originally imagined it.

There will be no South Dakota campground, no planned tour of historic sites, and no visit with friends along the original route.

Instead, their time together will be spent helping build the beginning of a new life.

That may not have been the plan, but it is still a meaningful way to honor their tradition.

Sometimes being a daddy means taking your daughter on an adventure.

Sometimes it means helping her move toward one of her own.

Plans changing does not mean the original plan failed.

It means life presented something new, and we had to decide how we would respond.

We could have focused only on what we were missing, or we could turn toward the road in front of us.

We chose to turn.

We packed the U-Haul.

We brought our daughter and granddaughter to Colorado.

We are helping set up the apartment, taking in the sights, and making the most of the time we have together before her new job begins.

Soon, we will have to travel home without them.

That will be the hardest part of this journey.

Still, we know this change is also the beginning of something good. Our daughter is stepping into a new opportunity, and our granddaughter will begin experiencing a new place to call home.

We will learn new routines, plan future visits, and find ways to remain close across the miles.

The road did not take us where we expected to go this summer.

But that is life.

Sometimes we plan the journey.

Sometimes the journey changes us.

Learning to pivot does not mean pretending we are not disappointed or sad. It means accepting that the road has changed and continuing forward with love, hope, and an open heart.

South Dakota will wait for another day.

For now, Colorado is where our family needs us.

And that makes it the right road to follow.
