Beauty in the Little Things
A quiet walk, black-eyed Susans, and a sunset worth turning around to see remind us that beauty often waits in the little things along the road less traveled.
Sometimes beauty does not wait for the perfect destination.
Sometimes it grows beside the path.
Jim and I were out for a walk when I saw the black-eyed Susans. Their bright yellow petals stood out against the green grass, simple and beautiful in a way that made me stop. I had to take a picture.
They were not part of a planned garden. They were not sitting under a sign that said scenic view. They were just there, blooming quietly in the middle of an ordinary walk.
But that is the thing about beauty.
You have to be willing to notice it.
A Walk, a Wildflower, and a Reason to Pause
When you are walking, it is easy to keep moving.
One step after another. Stay on the path. Finish the walk. Get back to whatever comes next.
But those black-eyed Susans made me pause.
They reminded me that some of the prettiest things are not found because we planned to see them. They are found because we slowed down long enough to look.
That little moment became more than a picture. It became a reminder that the world is full of small gifts, but we often walk right past them.
When Mandy Turned Around
Later, our daughter Mandy was out for a drive when she saw something beautiful.
She could have kept going.
She could have glanced at the sunset, smiled for a second, and let it disappear behind her. But she did not.
She turned around.
She drove back over the bridge so she could capture the view and send it to me.
That meant so much because it was not just a sunset picture. It was the act of noticing. It was the choice to go back. It was her seeing something beautiful and deciding it was worth sharing.
Sometimes the best memories happen that way.
Not because everything went according to plan, but because someone was willing to turn around for something worth seeing.
The Road Less Traveled Still Has Something to Say
There is comfort in staying on the path chosen for us.
It is familiar. It is easy. It gets us where we think we are supposed to go.
But sometimes the most beautiful things are found when we take a different road, pause for a moment, or turn around for one more look.
The road less traveled does not always have to be far away.
Sometimes it is a country road.
Sometimes it is a bridge at sunset.
Sometimes it is a patch of wildflowers beside a walking path.
Sometimes it is simply choosing to notice what others might skip.
Beauty Belongs to the One Who Notices
Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.
One person may see weeds beside the road. Another sees black-eyed Susans glowing in the light.
One person may drive across a bridge and keep going. Another sees the sunset, turns around, and captures a moment before it fades.
The beautiful thing is not always the place itself.
Sometimes the beauty is in the noticing.
It is in the pause.
It is in the turn.
It is in the decision to stop long enough to see what is right in front of you.
Chasing the Sun in the Little Things
That is what Chasing the Sun means to me.
It is not only about big trips, long drives, or faraway places. It is also about the little things along the way.
The quiet things.
The ordinary things.
The things we might miss if we are only focused on the destination.
Jim and I stopped for the black-eyed Susans.
Mandy turned around for the sunset.
And both moments reminded me that beauty is often closer than we think.
We just have to slow down, look around, and leave room for wonder.
Because sometimes the path chosen for us may get us where we are going.
But the road less traveled may show us what we would have missed.
